The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done east of town on Dent County Road 421, in the Sinkin Township area on Dent County Roads 557 and 558 and also in the Montauk area on various dead end roads.  Simpson said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 246, and crews would be hauling rock to various roads through out the county.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 233, 437, 616 and also on the Golf Course Road. Tune said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 401 and a crew would be patching the chip and seal on Dent County Road 321. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Ethics in Government Conference in Jefferson City on Tuesday and learned that in order to be in compliance with the Sunshine Law the Commission is required to publish notice of a meeting with an attentive agenda 24 hours in advance. Skiles said he would find out more information about this requirement before any action is taken. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the Juvenile Officer for Dent County was going to meet with the Commission at 11:00 to discuss the juvenile budget for the 2007 year. Tom Haines, District Ranger for the US Forest Service, stopped by to thank the Commission for clearing roadways so quickly after December’s ice storm. Commissioner Simpson reported that he would be attending the Tourism Tax Committee meeting on Thursday night to assist in developing the 2007 budget. The Dent County Commission would like to extend their condolences to the families who lost loved ones in Monday’s accident. Their loss is truly community felt. There will be no Commissioners meeting on Monday as the Dent County Courthouse will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened in Phelps County on Highway 68 about 5.6 miles south of Highway 8 at 9:30 Thursday morning. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Dodge Avenger driven southbound by 22-year old Jeanni L. Wethy of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway, then returned to the highway before going off the right side of the road again where the Avenger crossed a culvert and became airborne. The vehicle came to rest in a roadside ditch and sustained moderate damages. Wethy suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the St. James EMS to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Wethy was not wearing a seat restraint when the accident occurred.

The band “Midnight Flight” and two of its members have been nominated for Midwest regional awards at the 33rd annual SPBGMA Bluegrass Music Awards. Fiddle player Gerald Jones has been nominated for “Fiddle Performer of the Year” and vocalist Jimmie Allison has been nominated for “Male Vocalist of the Year.” The band itself has been nominated in three different categories: Traditional Bluegrass Band of the Year, Instrumental Group of the Year, and the Entertaining Group of the Year. The awards ceremony will be held Saturday night at the capital Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Jefferson City. Congratulations on the nominations!

IThe Salem Lady Basketball Tigers improved their record to 12-2 and 3-0 in the SCA with a solid 56-41 win at Thayer Thursday night. Allison Jones led the way with 18 points followed by Natalie Howard with 11 and Kirsten Stephens with nine. Salem will be home on Tuesday night to face the Owensville Lady Dutchmen starting at 6:00 and you can hear the varsity game on KSMO.

The Salem JV Lady Tigers dropped a 50-28 decision last night to Thayer.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will start their SCA schedule tonight as they host the Cabool Bulldogs at the SHS Gym. The JV will start things of at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. The Missouri Tigers (11-4, 0-2), will be back in action tomorrow as they will face Kansas State Saturday afternoon at 3:00. You can hear the game on KSMO joined in progress after Blues Hockey.

The St. Louis Blues will be hosting the Los Angeles Kings starting at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon in a nationally televised game on NBC. You can hear the game on KSMO radio. The Blues have won three of the last four games.

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Jimmy Gobble, avoiding salary arbitration. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Gobble posted a record of 4-6 with two saves and a 5.14 earned run average in a career-high 60 appearances last season. In his first full big league campaign, he made six starts and finished with 80 strikeouts in 84 innings.

The St. Louis Cardinals have invited converted outfielder from pitcher Rick Ankiel to the major league spring training camp after he signed a minor league contract with the club for one year.

Funeral services for Beulah Sellers of Salem, age 88, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Grace Community Church.

Funeral services for Glenn Copeland of Bunker, age 50, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Tammy J. Davis of Salem, age 46, will be Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Grace Community Church. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Student Ministries at Grace Community Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Jennifer Wisdom of Salem, age 46, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Grace Community Church. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Grace Community Church Nursery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
