The Cosmopolitan Club held it’s 62nd Annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Pageant this past Saturday night at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. Carly Green was crowned the 2013 Miss Salem by the 2012 Miss Salem, Lindsey Purcell. The 1st Runner-Up went to Ashley LaRue and the 2nd Runner-Up was presented to Kristen Land. The girls voted for the Miss Personality Award and that was given to Kendra Ragsdale. The Cosmopolitan Club wanted to thank all those who attended, performed, and made the event a success.

An accident occurred at 7:33 Saturday night in Crawford County on Moutray Road about two miles east of Steelville. According to the highway patrol, 45-year old Lawrence Filby of Steelville was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado west when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle then ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence, and then struck a tree. Filby was ejected from the vehicle and suffered moderate injuries. He was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. An occupant, 49-year old Melinda Markley of Cuba, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Neither were wearing seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.

An accident occurred on Wednesday at 1:29 in the afternoon in Iron County on Highway 32 about 2 miles West of Bixby. According to the Highway Patrol report, the accident occurred when a 2002 Ford Focus driven by 29-year old Robert Metz of Viburnum attempted to pass a 2005 Peterbilt Tractor and Trailer driven by 54-year old Larry Skaggs of Viburnum when Metz struck the tractor and trailer and then struck a 2007 Kenworth Dump Truck driven by 53-year old Terrance Baird. Metz suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Ford Focus was totaled and towed by Abney’s Towing, while the Tractor and Trailer and the Dump Truck sustained minor damages and were driven from the scene. All involved were wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident.

The Salem Police Department has released their report. On Thursday, February 28th at 9:00 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Texas County for a 26-year old Salem female who was being held in lieu of a warrant from the City of Salem. She was placed under arrest on the active warrant and transported to Dent County Jail, where she was incarcerated on the warrant. She was also issued a summons to appear in court on a charge from a previous incident of trespassing at Walmart. On Friday, March 1st at 11:12 in the morning, an officer was called to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter and trespassing. The investigation led to the arrest of a 33-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $14.97 and trespassing. He was issued summonses to appear in court and was incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. Later that evening at 9:06, an officer was sent to a residence in the 300 block of East Hunt in reference to a domestic disturbance. That investigation revealed that a 35-year old Salem male had damaged a residence and a vehicle. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for property damage, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault on a law enforcement officer. He was issued summonses to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. During the investigation, a 54-year old male of West Plains was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, March 2nd at 12:44 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of led to the arrest of a 33-year old female of Edgar Springs for possession of amphetamines, opiates, and benzodiazepines. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Also arrested was a 25-year old Salem male on an active arrest warrant from Rolla. He posted bond on the warrant and was released with a date to appear in court. On Sunday, March 3rd at 3:52 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Dent County Animal Shelter in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a 39-year old Salem male had taken a laptop computer valued at $400 from an office in the shelter. He was then arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Monday, March 4th at 8:00 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a Stihl chainsaw valued at $250 and a Husqvarna chainsaw valued at $300 from a residence in the 800 block of East Third. Anyone with information regarding the theft is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The City of Salem Spring Youth Soccer program will be starting soon for all children ages 4-12 years and Spring Youth Soccer sign-ups will be held on Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Jarnell Stokes registered a double-double as the Tennessee Volunteers held on for a 64-62 victory over the Missouri Tigers. Laurence Bowers poured in a game-high 20 points for the Tigers (22-9, 11-7), which received 10 points and nine assists from Phil Pressey. Missouri is seeded 6th in the SEC Tournament and will play the winner of the Texas A&M/ Auburn game on Thursday at 9:00.

Corey Perry potted a pair of goals as part of a three-goal third period that lifted the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. Ryan Reaves and Patrik Berglund netted a goal apiece for the Blues, who will host the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

Jordany Valdespin plated the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Mets blanked the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, in spring training play on Sunday. Kolten Wong, Shane Robinson and Rob Johnson had the only hits for the Cardinals, who received five shutout innings from Jamie Garcia. The Cards play the Yankees today at 12:05.

The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with first baseman/ outfielder Allen Craig. Craig belted 22 homers, drove in 92 runs and batted .307 with a .522 slugging percentage in 119 games last season. The Cardinals also announced that shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo reconstructive elbow surgery. They did not release a timetable for Furcal's recovery, but a normal period of 6-to-8 months would likely sideline the three-time All-Star for the entire 2013 season.

Jeff Francoeur belted a home run, a triple and a double to drive in three runs as the Royals pummeled the Angels, 17-11, on Sunday in a spring training game. The Royals are off today.

The Kansas City Chiefs officially released offensive lineman Eric Winston. Winston started 16 games for the Chiefs in 2012. He was scheduled to make $4.9 million this year.

The 2013 Cardinal pocket schedules have arrived! Those schedules can be picked up at businesses around town that sponsor Cardinal baseball games heard on KSMO Radio as well as in the front office of the KSMO studio.

Funeral services for Willis L. Guffey of Hillsboro formerly of Salem, age 83, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Chapel Hill Mortuary in Cedar Hill Mo. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Memorial Gardens. 

Memorial service for Benton Clark Warfel of Salem, age 79, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial service for Frances M. Wallen of Rolla, age 88, will be held Saturday, March 23rd at the First Presbyterian Church in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the church. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
