The Dent County Commissioners regular Monday meeting was held at the Dent County Courthouse where Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles discussed the proposed Bolder Five-Year Direction of MoDOT that reduces the number of District offices to seven, where 111 maintenance facilities will be closed reducing the number of maintenance supervisors by 104, and where 17 engineers will no longer be needed. Skiles stated that MoDOT will also be selling off equipment as well as the property where the district offices are. The total amount of personnel to be reduced is 1,200 employees. The district that Dent County would belong to would have 24 counties comprised of 576,000 people and 15,000 miles of road with the headquarters in Sikeston. Skiles said that MoDOT Director Kevin Keith said that people would see less mowing, less new striping, and slower snow removal with the reorganization. Missouri has the 7th largest road system in the United States, but ranks 42nd in funding. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that workers would be checking for washouts, pot holes, and downed trees due to the 1-2 inches of rain received. He went on to say that brush cutting would be done on Dent County Roads 5460 and 5465. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that his crews would be patching roads and repairing washouts. He said that a man would be going to Springfield to get oil for chip and seal repair. Presiding Commissioner Skiles also reported on the 2012-2016 State Transportation Improvement Plan and scheduled is the resurfacing of Highway 119 from Highway 32 to Montauk in the winter of 2012, and the resurfacing of Highway 72 from Dent County Road 2090 to the Salem city limits in 2014. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the actual cost to the county for the April election came to $15,918.60. She also said that the county received a refund of $2,381.91 from Rolla Municipal Utilities for overpayments made for Dent County’s portion of utilities for the public defenders office. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
