A Special Election for the US Representative seat for the 8th District was held Tuesday and Jason Smith from Dent County was the winner. This election was to elect the replacement for Joann Emerson who resigned the position in February. Here are the unofficial results for the entire 8th District is as follows:

Steve Hodge (DEM)                       17,203 votes
Doug Enyart (CST)                          2,265 votes
Bill Slantz (LIB)                                 968 votes
Thomas Brown (Write-In)                     85 votes
Robert W. George (Write-In)                73 votes
Wayne L. Byington (Write In)               25 votes

A total of 2,770 votes were cast in Dent County and that ended up being 29.34% of the registered voters. The unofficial results for Dent County are as follows:

An accident occurred at 12:33 Tuesday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway 72 at County Road 4080 about five miles east of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Yamaha Motorcycle driven by 51-year old Karl Jacobs of Salem traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Jacobs suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. The motorcycle sustained moderate damage and was removed by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

The Salem Police Department has released a number of reports. On Thursday, May 23rd at 12:00 pm, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store located on South Macarthur in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed the driver of a red Chevrolet Cavalier pumped $97.32 in fuel on two separated occasions and left without paying. At 10:33 that same night, an officer transported a 23-year old Salem female to Cox North in Springfield, in lieu of a mental commitment order. Then at 10:45 that night, an officer was detailed to the 700 block of East Center in reference to a disturbance. That investigation revealed that a 26-year old Salem male had assaulted a 16-year old male juvenile and a 26-year old male both of Salem. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Friday, May 24th at 2:22 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to a residence in the 300 block of East Rubinstein in reference to damage to private property. The investigation revealed that two juvenile males threw rocks at a 1982 Chevrolet truck and caused damages totaling $660. The two juvenile suspects fled the scene on foot after being confronted by the owner of the truck. That night at 7:28, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East First Street in reference to a disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same night at 11:12, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of North Henderson in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation of the report revealed that a 27-year old Salem male had assaulted a 24-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for domestic assault.  He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. Anyone with any information regarding the theft of fuel or damage to private property reports is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem TCRC will host a hands-on workshop titled “Using QuickBooks Pro Software”.  This workshop will be held on Thursday, June 6th at 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Chester “Ed” Pratt, local CPA with Pratt, Mitchell & Company, will be the instructor.  You will learn how to get quick solutions to problems and questions, discover amazing tips and tricks, learn to use QuickBooks® the right way, and master tricky transactions. Students will have hands on instruction in the Salem TCRC Computer Lab. Each participant will have a computer workstation. Class size is limited to 10 students. The Salem TCRC is located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 W. Rolla Road in Salem.  The cost for this workshop is $100 and the price includes student handouts. Paul Goldschmidt scorched a go-ahead single in the top of the 14th inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks over the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6, in the second test of a four-game set Tuesday at Busch Stadium. David Freese collected four hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, while Allen Craig clubbed a two-run homer and Shane Robinson added a solo shot for St. Louis, which went a woeful 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals and Diamondbacks will play again tonight and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

The Kansas City Royals set a new record for futility with Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins. The Royals suffered their 11th straight defeat at Kauffman Stadium to establish a new club record for consecutive home losses in one season. Luis Mendoza (1-3) allowed three runs on seven hits to go with three walks over 4 1/3 innings. The Royals and Twins will play again tonight.

The Kansas City Royals took starting catcher Salvador Perez off the restricted list among a wave of roster moves prior to Tuesday's opener with the Minnesota Twins. Perez had been away from the team since May 25 to return to his native Venezuela following the death of his grandmother. Catcher Adam Moore was optioned to Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move, with reliever Louis Coleman also sent to the Pacific Coast League club while right-hander Kelvin Herrera was recalled.

Funeral services for Betty Ellis of Salem, age 83, will be this morning at 10:00 at the New Harmony Church in Salem. Interment will be in the Roberts Cemetery at Sligo. Memorials are suggested to the Good News Radio Program of Washington, Missouri. Arrangements under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Betty Lou Sturdivant of Salem, age 66, will be Thursday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation.

Funeral arrangements for Brenda Bell of Salem, age 63, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win, the Round Pond Cemetery, or the Second Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Edith Love of Steelville, age 96, will be held Friday evening at 7:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until service time Friday.

Memorial services for Alta Geraldean “Dean” Hogan of Salem, age 80, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Research.

Memorial services for Carolyn Ann Steiner of Rolla, age 58, will be held at 1:00 on Saturday at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Memorial services for George Garth Miller Sr. of Salem, age 90, will be held in his hometown of Clarion, Iowa at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.
