The City of Salem Annual Water Quality Report has been released and there were no violations that occurred for the calendar year 2008. All levels of contaminants found were lower than required by government regulations. If you would like to see the City of Salem Annual Water Quality Report, a copy can be found at the City of Salem Administration Building at 4th and Iron Streets, at the Water Department Office or at the KSMO Radio studios.

A felony warrant for kidnapping was issued on Wednesday, June 3rd, for 29-year old Jetta Midyett also known as Jetta Niehouse of Lenox. The warrant alleges that she took sons, 7-year old Wilman Midyett and 4-year old Oliver Midyett and that they may have traveled out of state. Wilman has brown hair and blue eyes and may possible be wearing glasses, Oliver has sandy hair and blue eyes. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by calling 1 (800) THE-LOST or the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 729-3241.       

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving leaving the scene of an accident, a man attempting to commit suicide and a stolen wallet. On Friday, June 5th at 9:20 p.m. an officer was detailed to the area of the Highway 32-72 junction for a leaving the scene of an accident. The report led to the arrest of a 32-year old Salem man for driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving and failure to register a motor vehicle. He was incarcerated on the charges. On Monday, June 8th at 1:45 p.m. the Salem Police Dispatch received a telephone call from a female giving information on a 32-year old Salem man who was attempting to commit suicide with a gun. The caller advised that he was driving around in the county and could possibly be in town and gave several locations he could be. The subject was located in the 100 block of North Iron, shortly after he had inflicted himself with a gunshot to the upper left shoulder area. He was taken into custody, transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for medical assistance and later transferred to the Phelps County Hospital for mental evaluation. At 3:15 that afternoon, an officer was contacted at station in reference to a stolen wallet. The reporting party stated, between 2:00 and 3:00 that afternoon, her brown trifold wallet was stolen from a shopping cart while at Wal-Mart. Anyone with information on the theft, which is still under investigation, is ask to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The regular monthly meeting of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) will be held tonight at the MRPC office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James beginning at 7:30 pm. After approval of the agenda and several contracts, Director Richard Cavender will give a presentation on the different types of business loan programs offered by the MRPC and the financial impact of those loans to the area. Connie Willman will then report on grants submitted and funded since the last meeting, along with application deadlines and funding availability. Tammy Snodgrass will report on solid waste activities and the on the Homeland Security Oversight Committee activities. Kraig Bone will report on MREPC activities, Donald Dodd will report on the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting and T.R. Dudley will report on workforce development activities. Chairman Laura Antalak and Director Richard Cavender will then report on issued of interest. The regular monthly meeting of the MRPC is open to the public.

The “Voice of the Ozarks” and other concerned recreational users of the Jacks Fork River and the Current River will be hosting a public meeting to discuss the newly proposed Ozark National Scenic Riverways’ General Management Plan Alternatives. The meeting in our area will be held tonight at the old Salem City Hall beginning at 7:00 pm. All concerned individuals are encouraged to attend and engage in an open discussion concerning the proposed restrictions contained within the General Management Plan Alternatives.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Auxiliary 2009 Garden Tour scheduled for June 28th has been cancelled due to the recent storms and the damage caused from those storms.

Colby Rasmus hit a three-run homer and Rick Ankiel had a double, triple and two-run shot, as the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a five-game losing skid after hammering the Florida Marlins, 13-4, in the second of a three-game set. Brendan Ryan went 4-5 in the game and Skip Schumaker chipped in with a pair of RBI for St. Louis, which won for only the third time in its last 11 games. Adam Wainwright (6-4) earned the win after going seven innings. The veteran righty gave up 11 hits and four runs, struck out four and walked three. St. Louis went 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. The Cards and Marlins will play this morning at 11:00 on KSMO Radio.

Gil Meche pitched seven scoreless innings and tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts, and the Kansas City Royals used three home runs to crush the Cleveland Indians, 9-0, in the middle of three games at Progressive Field. Meche (3-5) allowed just four hits and three walks for the Royals, who came into the game with just one win in their previous 11 outings. Alberto Callaspo hit a grand slam, while Jose Guillen and Miguel Olivo each added a two-run homer. Callaspo finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored to raise his season average to .311. The Royals and Indians rubber game will be held tonight in Cleveland.

Graveside services for Marie Wycoff of Lake St. Louis, formerly of St. James, age 83, will be held this morning at 11:00 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Mary Ellen "Molly" Ragan of Vienna, age 80, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in Vienna. Interment will be in the James Community Cemetery in Vienna. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Vienna or the James Community Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edna J. Steensland of Rolla, formerly of Rapid City, South Dakota, age 97, will be held Friday in Casper Wyoming. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or Phelps Regional Hospice.

Graveside services for George Franklin Blair of Cuba, formerly of Steelville, age 85, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Steelville Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Donald Burton Gamblin of Salem, formerly of Florida, age 81, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Union Cemetery.

Funeral services for Estle Radford of Centerville, age 88, will be today at 1:00 at McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be today from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Polk Memorial Cemetery.

Graveside services for J. Richene Emory Laubach of Willow Springs, age 74, will be held Saturday at 4:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Graveside services for James “Jim” Carl Thomas of Salem, formerly of Westland, Michigan, age 55, will be held Monday, June 15th at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Graveside visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Daphna Biggs of Salem are incomplete at this time and are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
