An accident occurred at 3:00 Monday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about three miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Chevrolet pickup driven by 53-year old James Evans of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 19. The Chevrolet ran off the right side of the roadway. Evans then over-corrected and the pickup ran off the left side of the roadway where it struck a pole and overturned. Evans suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet pickup was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. Evans was arrested on a DWI felony charge and was later released.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, and a shoplifter. On Saturday, June 26th at 5:03 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East Hunt in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report revealed that a 20-year old Salem female had assaulted a 27-year old Salem female.  Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Monday, June 28th at 1:23 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 34-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise. She was issued a summons to appear in court and  was released. On Tuesday morning, June 29th at 10:37, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to an assault.  The investigation of the report revealed that a 22-year old Salem male had assaulted a 19-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting this afternoon at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 4:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, Ruth Gilmore wishes to ask some questions on the City’s electric rates as well as the City’s electrical system; and David Tune wishes to also ask the Board about the electric rate increase. In unfinished business, Mayor Gary Brown, with the approval of the Board, will appoint an Alderman to fill the un-expired term of East Ward Alderman Jim Jackson who passed away. The Mayor will also present the budget adjustments to the recently passed 2010/2011 budget since the proposed electric rate increase was used in determining revenues for the new budget and the ordinance setting those new rates did not pass. After reports of city officials, boards and committees, Mayor Brown will then give his comments on various issues involving the City of Salem. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3203 will be discussed which is a required ordinance to meet State Statues when increasing or decreasing revenues and expenditures after a budget has been adopted. After approval of the bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the minutes from the previous meeting the Board will address bills, the 2011 budget start for a tax levy and the insurance policy that is due. There will be a calendar review and the monthly reimbursement report. In old business the Board will discuss the district usage police and in new business the Board will start a review of the mutual aid agreement. Chief Brad Nash will then discuss roof repairs. After various reports from Board members the Board may then vote to go into Executive Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem Farmers’ Market will host Salem Memorial District Hospital dietitian Jason Edwards today who will be demonstrating how to cook healthy meals using produce from the farmers’ market from 3:00 to 6:00.  Students from the Garden ‘n Grow program at the Bonebrake Center of Nature & History will also be at the market this evening, selling their home grown cucumbers and other produce.  Stop by to visit with these young gardeners, and learn some new recipes for your farmers’ market purchases. The MU Extension “Seasonal and Simple” cookbook will also be available. The market is a project of the Salem Area Community Betterment Association, and is open Tuesdays from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. – noon.  For more information contact Sarah Hultine Massegale at 729-3196.

Yuniesky Betancourt's run-scoring single in the 10th inning capped the game-winning rally, as Kansas City edged Seattle, 6-4, in the opener of a three-game set at Safeco Field. Billy Butler and Alberto Callaspo each drove in a pair of runs, and David DeJesus finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the Royals, who have won four of five. Joakim Soria pitched the bottom of the frame to record his 23rd save, holding down the game for Kyle Farnsworth (2-0), who pitched one clean inning to pick up the victory. The Royals and Mariners play again tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be in Colorado tonight to start a three game series with the Rockies starting at 7:20 on KSMO Radio.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Funeral services for Gary Lee Norris of Valley Park, Missouri, formerly of St. James, age 52, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be held in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Betty Gott of Salem, formerly of Ava, age 78, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday at the Church from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Salem or the SBU Salem Campus. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Alvina Penning of Cuba, age 84, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PMwith a V.F.W. Service at 1:30. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Gail E. Biggs of Cuba, formerly of Sligo, age 83, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery in Salem with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for Betty Jean Gamblin of Poplar Bluff, formerly of Salem, age 78, will be held Thursday at 200 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 100 until service time Thursday. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Salem.

Graveside services for Frieda Emily Hamilton of Rolla, age 92, will be held Saturday July the 10th at 11:00 A.M. at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Shannon County, Missouri. Memorials may be made to Timber Volunteer Fire Department. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

A memorial service for Loeta Arlene Crews of Boss, age 74, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Burton Eugene Brown of Rolla, formerly of Michigan, age 91, are incomplete at but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
