An accident occurred at 3:14 Tuesday afternoon in Iron County on Highway 32 about a fifth of a mile west of Bixby. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Ford Ranger driven by 16- year old Kevin Koon of Salem, ran off the right side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree. Koon suffered minor injuries and sought his own medical attention. An occupant in the vehicle, 28 year-old Sara Brush of Bixby, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem hospital. Koon was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Ranger sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Abney’s Wrecker of Viburnum.

The Disaster Recovery Center in Ellington will remain open until Thursday, July 23rd. The Center is located at the Ellington City Hall at 100 Tubbs Avenue and the hours are 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. The Disaster Recovery Center in Houston will also remain open until Saturday, July 25th. The Center is located at the Texas County Justice Center at 519 North Grand Avenue and the hours are 8:00 to 7:00 pm. Remember, if you only signed the preliminary assistance list at the Dent County fire station back in May, you are NOT signed up for FEMA disaster assistance. To apply for Federal Disaster Assistance visit the website www.disasterassistance.gov or call 1 800 621-FEMA (3362). The deadline is August 18th.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5525, 6020, 6255, 6570 and 6580. Purcell also said that a crew would be in the Montauk area on Dent County Road 6630, cutting brush and clearing the right a way and work continues on widening Dent County Road 5220. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2030, 2070, 3300 and 3310. Larson also said that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 4380 and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3225, 3230 and 3240. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that as of July 18th, only 29 absentee ballots have been cast for the August 4th Special Election. Charlie Plank stopped by the meeting to ask Commissioner Larson about cutting the brush on a sharp curve on Dent County Road 4290. Larson said he would get a crewmember out there to take a look at the curve and get the brush cut. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Tuesday, July 14th at 11:04 am, the District was paged out to Route DD to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital with a patient. The scene was brought under control and a total of four firefighters returned to the station at 11:37 am. On Tuesday, July 15th at 12:15 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to assist the Dent County Coroner Gina White on East 1st Street in Salem. The scene was brought under control and a total of six firefighters returned to the station at 12:38 pm. At 12:45 that same afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a call in the 1000 block of Center Street in reference to a kitchen fire. Upon arrival six firefighters found the fire was out and the District then ventilated the house. At 7:45 that evening, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital with a patient. The scene was brought under control and a five firefighters returned to the station at 7:56 pm.

The American Legion Post #99 located on Highway 32 West in Salem will receive a captured Russian tank to put at the post as a memorial. A concrete pad that requires 16-yards of concrete has been poured and anyone that is interested in donating to the American Legion for the concrete pad is asked to call Richard LaBrash at the American Legion at 729-1394 or you can drop your donation off at the City of Salem Administration Office.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Carlos Lee hit a grand slam and Hunter Pence had a two-run shot, as the Houston Astros topped the St. Louis Cardinals, 11-6. Mark DeRosa homered twice and Ryan Ludwick added a three-run shot for the Cardinals, who have lost three of four overall. Todd Wellemeyer (7-8) allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss, though P.J. Walters later surrendered six runs in two-plus innings of relief. The Cardinals will try to salvage a win in this series as they send Chris Carpenter to the mound tonight against Roy Oswalt at 6:45 on KSMO Radio.

Erick Aybar had quite the day, finishing off Tuesday's doubleheader by registering a career-high four hits to go with three runs batted in and two runs scored, as the LA Angels recorded a 10-2 victory and a sweep of the two games against the Royals. In the first game, Aybar went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, and the Angels won, 8-5. Billy Butler launched a two-run homer, while David DeJesus had two hits and two runs scored for the Royals. Sidney Ponson (1-6) yielded six runs on eight hits in five-plus innings in game one. In the second game, Bruce Chen (0-5) allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings for the Royals. Jose Guillen and Yuniesky Betancourt each had an RBI in the loss in game two. The Royals and Angels wrap up their series tonight in KC.

Funeral services for Grace Boatman Wilkerson of Salem, age 94, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Full Gospel Church.

Funeral services for William Henry “Jack” Davis of Imperial, formerly of Davisville, age 88, will be held today at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the ABC Memorial Fund for the Davisville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Stephen P. Bullock, Jr. of Brighton, age 35, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Miles Cemetery in St. James with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Albert J. Krul of Salem, age 87, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Thursday morning from 11:00 until service time.  Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Freewill Baptist Church. 

Funeral services for Lola Luna of St. James, age 83, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Joey Gant of Bunker, age 40, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will begin at 4:00 Thursday afternoon. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Bunker Relay for Life or the Greeley Cemetery.

Funeral services for Iva Irene Herren of Salem, age 90, will be held Friday at 12:00 at Wilson Mortuary.  Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 until service time.  Interment will be in the Weese Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Donald Leo Pardee of St. James, age 89, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James and a Prayer Vigil will be held at 7:00. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. Memorials are suggested to the St. Anthony Catholic Cemtery.
