The Salem R-80 Board of Education will hold their tax rate hearing, budget hearing and regular meeting in the district administrative offices boardroom tonight. Beginning at 6:00, the tax rate hearing is scheduled followed by the budget hearing. After the hearings are complete, the regular meeting will begin after the approval of the agenda. Superintendent Steve Bryant will discuss Professional Development Days, the opening of school, the MSBA fall meeting and annual conference, and the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) annual yearly progress report. New business will include the approval of tuition for the 2007/2008 school year, approval of the 2006/2007 ASBR, approval of the 2007 tax rate, and the amending of the 2007/2008 budget. Also during new business, the Board will consider the approval of the Developmental Preschool Transportation Agreement, discuss an audit engagement letter and hear a program evaluation on climate. The Board will then adjourn their regular meeting and go into Executive Session. The hearings and the regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education are open to the public.

An accident happened at 4:30 Wednesday in Texas County on Route V about four miles south of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Kawasaki Motorcycle driven by 54-year old Edward Eaves of Raymondville, ran off the roadway on a curve causing Eaves to be ejected from the motorcycle. Eaves suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, then flown to Cox South in Springfield. The motorcycle sustained extensive damages and was removed by the owner’s family.

An accident happened at 9:55 Wednesday night in Reynolds County at the Rayfield Cemetery about seven miles south of Lesterville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1987 Chevy Z-28 driven southbound in the cemetery by 46-year old Gary Chadbourne of Boss, failed to negotiate a curve, went off an embankment and struck a pavilion. Chadbourne suffered moderate injuries as did a passenger, 47-year old Rocky White of Black. Both were taken to Advanced Health care in Ellington. Neither Chadbourne or White was wearing a seat restraint when the accident happened and the Chevy Z-28 was totaled. Chadbourne was given a citation for driving while intoxicated.

The Dent County Fall Festival Board will hold their annual baby contest again this year as part of their royalty pageant and it features ten contestants: Avery Claire Bettigrew, Baylee Robertson, Cierra Richardson, Chandler James Brakefield, Trethan Richter, Estrella K. Purcell, Tristan Lewis, Jared Wethy, James Richardson and Anthony Fletcher. The festival board will also hold their annual Little Mr. And Miss Dent Contest. There are seven Little Miss Contestants and they are Reggie Parks, Kirsten Golden, Claudia Lea Chilton, Trinity Lewis, McKayla Black, Ashton Mink and Isabella Ripley. There is only one Little Mister entry and that is Elijah Wethy. Each of these contestants has a decorated collection can at the main offices of the Bank of Salem and Town and Country Bank, and each penny collected equals one vote. The winners will be announced on August 23rd.

Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen and Jim Edmonds all homered as St. Louis downed Milwaukee, 8-3, in the second test of a three- game set at Miller Park. Rolen finished 4-for-5 with a two-run shot and three runs scored for the Cardinals, who closed to within 3 1/2 games of Milwaukee in the NL Central. Pujols was 2-of-5 with a solo homer and Edmonds was 2-for-4 with a solo shot. Joel Pineiro (3-2) allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings of work en route to the win. Bill Hall and Geoff Jenkins both homered for the Brewers, who remain atop the division despite losing three straight games and seven of nine. The Cardinals will go for the sweep today at Milwaukee and try to close the gap to 2 1/2 games this afternoon at Milwaukee starting at 12:45 with the Dugout Show on KSMO Radio. Adam Wainwright will be on the mound for the Red Birds.

Ian Kinsler homered, Michael Young added a two-run double and Vicente Padilla pitched five innings as the Texas Rangers held off the Kansas City Royals, 4-3. Gil Meche (7-11) yielded three runs -- two earned -- on five hits, walked three and struck out four over 6 1/3 innings for the Royals, who have dropped four of six. John Buck and Joey Gathright each finished with an RBI. The Royals have dropped seven of their last eight in Arlington and will face the Rangers again tonight.

The Kansas City Royals signed Mike Moustakas, the No. 2 overall pick in the June draft, just minutes before the midnight deadline on Wednesday. Moustakas, a power-hitting infielder from California, was named Baseball America's High School Player of the Year after batting .577 with 24 homers during his senior season at Chatsworth High School.

Funeral services for Esther R. Leonard, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Corinth Baptist Church.

Interment service for Retired Staff SGT William W. Harney of Salem, age 68, will be held Friday at 1:15 at the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Crossville Baptist Church and all the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Nellie Mae Galt of Whittier CA, formerly of Cherryville, age 87, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Center Ridge Pentecostal Church in Davisville. Visitation will be Friday 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Martin Cemetery in Cherryville.

Memorial services for Mark Donald Isaak of Viburnum, age 49, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Viburnum. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Emmanuel Methodist Church of Viburnum or charity of choice.

Graveside services for Edward Hall Jr.of Rolla, age 81, will be Saturday at 2:00 at the Liberty Cemetery in Wakefield, Illinois.  Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.  Memorials are suggested to the Phelps Regional Hospice.

Funeral services for Gayle L. Neal of St. James, age 58 are incomplete at this time, but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of St. James.
