The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released their reports. On Monday, August 26th deputies were advised of a theft of a chainsaw that occurred in the 200 block of County Road 5135. Deputies discovered that a 66-year old Salem male was the reported victim. He stated that a 16-inch Husqvarna chainsaw, valued at $250, was taken without his consent. The investigation is ongoing. On Friday, august 30th at about 3:15 in the afternoon, a resident of 346 County Road 5130 called the Sheriff's Office to report that the door to her residence had been kicked in. A deputy was dispatched to the residence and was shown the damage that was sustained to the door. The resident also stated that no items had been taken from the residence. Sheriff Stallings is asking residents in this area to contact the Sheriff's Office at 573-729-3241 to report any suspicious activities.   

An accident occurred at 2:04 Sunday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 8 about five miles west of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, 26-year old Amanda Todd of Steelville was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Aveo east when she lost control, causing the vehicle to cross the centerline, travel off the left side of the roadway, strike an embankemnt, and overturn. The vehicle then came to rest on it’s top in the roadway. Three occupants of Steelville in the vehicle suffered injuries. Suffering serious injuries was 6-year old Kadynce Todd of Steelville, who was flown by Arch to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in St. Louis. Suffering moderate injuries was 28-year old James Todd, who was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Suffering minor injuries was 2-year old Kyle Todd, who was also was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Salem Planning and Zoning Commission will be meeting at 6:30 tonight in the city hall council chambers to discuss the rezoning of 900 South McArthur from Residential R-1 to commercial owned by the Ora Campbell Trust, and also to consider a conditional use permit for an in-home business at 301 South McArthur called “Cakes, Cookies and More” owned by Tracey Wood. At 7:00, the Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting. In the hearing of persons, the board will hear from the Grace Community Church about closing a portion of Water Street for a Community Outreach to be held on September 15th from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM, and also to close that same area on Halloween between the hours of 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. They will also hear from Salem R-80 Superintendent Steve Carvajal with a request for some code variances on the Salem R-80 district renovation project. The board will review bids taken on a new ½ ton 4 X 4 pickup truck for the street department before going over the consent agenda. The board will then hear a report from the Planning and Zoning Commission meetings held prior to the regular alderman meeting from the commission chairman, Jerry Craig, before getting the report from Mayor Gary Brown on city activities. The board will determine who will represent them at the annual LAGERS meeting in October before adjourning. These meetings are open to public.

Zane Kyser scored five touchdowns and made 3 two-point conversions as Salem took advantage of three Houston turnovers and excellent field position to dismantle the Tigers, 48-16. Dylan Wisdom scored one touchdown and threw for another as Salem improves to 1-0 on the season as well as in the SCA. The Tigers will be at Salisbury this Saturday afternoon at 1:30 to face Plattsburg.

The Salem JV and 9th Grade Football Tigers will be at Willow Springs tonight starting at 5:30 to play five quarters of football. These changes were announced Friday by Athletic Director Phillip Karr. Next week, the JV and 9th grade Tigers will face Ava on Monday, September 9th starting at 5:30.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers captured 2nd place at the Houston Tournament this past weekend as the Lady Tigers demolished Cabool, 17-0, edged Bakersfield by the score of 4-3, then lost to Mansfield by a score of 6-2. The Lady Tigers are 2-3 as they will the Ava Bears in the first SCA game of the year. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will begin their season tonight when they travel to St. James for non-conference action against the Lady Tigers starting at 5:30.

The Cincinnati Reds made up ground on the St. Louis Cardinals by posting a 7-2 win in the opener of a crucial four-game set at Great American Ball Park. Matt Carpenter doubled home Adam Wainwright and scored on Matt Holliday's sacrifice fly. The Cardinals and Reds play again tonight at 5:35 and you can hear it on KSMO following the Salem game.

Will Smith turned in a stellar effort out of the bullpen in the Royals' 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Kauffman Stadium. Smith (2-1) struck out a career-best eight and yielded just one hit over 4 1/3 scoreless frames to lead the Royals to a seventh win in nine games. The Royals and Mariners play again tonight.

James Franklin threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns before coming out early in the third quarter, helping Missouri take command after early struggles and whip Murray State 58-14 Saturday night in their season opener. Henry Josey had 113 yards on 13 carries with a 68-yard score in his first game back from a left knee injury that required two surgeries and sidelined him all last season. Missouri will host the Toledo Rockets this Saturday at 2:30.

Graveside services for Wilma F. Land of Salem, age 90, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Jerry Schafer of Salem, age 73, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral Mass for Ellen Rose Geheb of Potosi, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Viburnum at 11:00. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum with a Rosary Service at 7:00. Interment will be in the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Cemetery in Viburnum. Memorials may be made to the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church.

Funeral Mass for Eileen Brugger of Salem, age 95, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be held from noon until service time at the church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Memorial services for Helen Kay Simmons of Salem, age 54, will be held at a later date.
